I AM MUSIC
After one of the craziest rollouts I have ever witnessed, we finally got the album, MUSIC!
It is probably one of the most anticipated albums of this decade so far, with high demands from fans over the past five years since Playboi Carti’s Whole Lotta Red, which paved the way for this new experimental sound he has been developing.
“POP OUT” opens the album up to be a Hip-Hop/Rock mix with its ultimate rage-inducing production, which later on “COCAIN NOSE” follows its steps. “CRUSH” is the second track and the first of the many appearances from Travis Scott where he produces this one. We then get “K POP”, previously released last year with the name “KETAMINE”. “EVIL J0RDAN” has a new intro featuring a sample from The Weeknd’s “Popular”, a fan favorite that was teased at Complex x Travis Scott’s CACTUSCON.
“PHILLY” features Travis Scott delivering a new anthem for the chorus while also having a great performance from deep voice Playboi Carti. Travis on “WAKE UP F1LTHY” delivers the hardest-hitting verse on the album, meant for the festivals for sure.
“MOJO JOJO” and “GOOD CREDIT” are more rage anthems, but this time featuring Kendrick Lamar?! This feature surprised many fans as we never had a collaboration from both artists. And they delivered. But it would be the first of many as “BACK00R” is another anthem between the two, but a chill one also featuring Jhene Aiko. “TOXIC” is another chill anthem featuring the catchiest lyrics from the album, also having what I believe to be the best feature on this album from Skepta.
“RATHER LIE” is another instant classic from The Weeknd and Playboi Carti where they replicate the same magic they created with their iconic song “TIMELESS”. “FINE SHIT” and “I SEEEEEE YOU BABY BOI” takes us back to the vibes Playboi Carti used to deliver before he transitioned into this rock aesthetic.
Playboi Carti brings out Future and Travis Scott on “CHARGE DEM HOES A FEE” recreating the magic they made on “TYPE SHIT”. Future continues his feature run on “TRIM” delivering a new classic with Playboi Carti. And finally Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti make a return as the classic duo to bring us “JUMPIN” and “TWIN TRIM”. But Playboi Carti does not forget to include the person who inspired his music, that being Young Thug on “WE NEED ALL DA VIBES” also featuring Ty Dolla $ign where this trio creates a new song for the summer.
But even after all the features galore we get from the rap industry, Playboi Carti is still able to shine in his own light with songs like “RADAR”, “CRANK”, “OLYMPIAN”, “OPM BABI”, and “OVERLY”. But especially on tracks like “DIS 1 GOT IT”, “LIKE WEEZY”, and of course the instant classic that was released last year “HBA”. He ends the album with “SOUTH ATLANTA BABY”, a perfect ending, it's not the craziest, but it's not the most chill either, it is the perfect way to capture the end of this era.
Playboi Carti had his entire fanbase on edge, waiting 5 years for a new project. Finally, they got what they deserved, 30 new tracks, a good chunk of them having the entire rap industry on it. And just today he released the complete version of MUSIC titled SORRY 4 DA WAIT, a reference to Lil Wayne’s Sorry 4 The Wait series, the ultimate inspiration for the albums creation containing classics like “DIFFERENT DAY”, “2024”, “BACKR00MS” and “FOMDJ”. Who knows what Playboi Carti has next with this new sound he has developed for himself.
