Voyage to Mars - MUNYA (2021)
Putting her songwriting skills and delicate, otherworldly vocal beauty on full display, MUNYA’s debut album Voyage to Mars overflows with a gorgeous balance of upbeat dance tunes and lowkey ballads.
Beginning with the mellow “Maracuya”, MUNYA dishes out a mellow techno-pop tune, completely in French, calling out a lover for not prioritizing her. Although she navigates earthly emotional themes in this track and in others, such as the guitar-driven “Pour Toi”, MUNYA thoroughly explores imagery revolving around the cosmos throughout the album. Growing up in a village six hours outside of Montreal, MUNYA has had ample experience with isolation, and living through a pandemic certainly added to that. Her inclusion of themes of outer space was entirely intentional, and paired with her instrumentation and breathy vocals, makes for a listen that doubles as an exercise in escapism. In the dreamy “Cocoa Beach”, MUNYA sings, “It’s a one-way through the night / She’s going wild, my friend / She’s a rocket in the sky” — and through this impressive debut, MUNYA proves that she is a rocket just waiting to blast off.
