Started from the bottom now we here; Pharrell starts the movie by looking up at the sky having the feeling of being lost in the world. I’m not saying I’m related to Pharrell Williams struggle and hardships. I am just saying I relate to him; the moment in the movie he brought up that he was pulled back in 7th grade because he barely passed. To quote his mom “he barely passed so he must do it again”. I got pulled back in kindergarten because I have a July birthday; which I can’t even imagine the pain he must of been going through.
Even though he passed 7th grade having to go through it again must of been awful. It did not help Pharrell that he has a creative mind which caused him to day dream during class. (He may of not been the best student) but he had the bravery to go for his dreams. No matter how the World viewed him; he saw value in God; started going to church when the world turned its back on him. For being too different.
I am not going to lie to the reader; I tried to watch Piece by Piece a couple weeks ago and turned it off after 5 minutes. I gave it another chance on the plane ✈️ back to Texas for spring break. And the movie completely changed my perspective on life. In my perspective the best way to watch Piece by Piece is by giving it its own volume. What I mean by that is that you have to be completely focused on the movie to actually understand the main theme.
I am not going to detail every part of the movie because it deserves to be watched! But I will discuss the parts that have a deeper meaning.
The businessmen seemed to have a deeper imagery meaning than I saw before; they represented the music industry top. And how they are hungry for more and more product (music) even if the music has not been produced long enough to be ready to be heard.
I may have been looking inwards too much but in the scene where Pharrell Williams is overthinking and not being able to direct his energy and attention towards one project; I viewed that as a manic episode which even I can relate to now having medicated bi-polar.
It is really difficult to balance out; which voice ideas are coming from. The heart, the mind, the spirit, or unrealistic ideas of grandeur (bi-polar).
Another idea of what the businessmen represent is that they are Pharrell Williams desires of the world. The desire for riches and wealth of the world; no desire for the riches of life. The more and more time Pharrell spent with them; the more and more his music became not him but what he wanted to see himself as.
The more and more he dedicated his life to Christ; the more outreach his music became. Singing about the one true God; the one true being within all beings. Allowed him to tap in with people all across the globe. I’d like to quote from God Bless Us All-
“The world on your shoulders; God blessed us all; just clear your mind; and you’ll feel like me” -N.E.R.D.
“You can’t hide your glow”
You can’t hide your glow
You can’t hide your glow
Just wow! If I would’ve heard these lyrics years ago; I would be more proud to be myself and not to be the person people want me to be. Either glow means; his spirit in Christ or glow could mean his inner desire to fulfill his destiny.
At the end of the movie he looks up to the sky and the camera angle shows a wide angle representing he has found himself. That he is ready to bring a piece of himself and others’ ideas to build masterpieces. Every single Pharrell Williams song has brought loving energy into my household! I can still recall dancing to Get Lucky/ Happy on Just Dance on the family Wii! All I gotta say; ya’ll can’t win against me; I AM HIM. Each time I’ve played Just Dance I break my own personal records. The positive energy Pharrell Williams music brings to the world; will always be astonishing to me. His music has continued to build up my confidence within myself! And I believe just by listening to one Pharrell Williams song a day; you can build up your positive energy within yourself. To go for your dreams; and to not be held back by anyone.
