On September 13, Death Cab for Cutie played at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Perfume Genius — otherwise known as Michael Alden Hadreas — opened for the indie band, and energized the audience with peppy indie pop-rock tunes like “Jason” and “On the Floor”, a particular fan favorite. The Iowa native’s performance was powerful and full of life. The main stars of the show, Death Cab for Cutie, were unmatched as always. Lead singer Ben Gibbard showed off his vocal skills in performances that were as good as (if not better than) the studio versions of the band’s greatest songs. Meanwhile, guitarist Dave Depper impressed the crowds with his guitar abilities during songs like “ I Will Possess Your Heart” and “The New Year”. Although some tracks performed are slower and more somber, the audience danced and sang along to the more upbeat ones like “Crooked Teeth” and “Soul Meets Body”. A particularly tender moment was Gibbard’s solo acoustic performance of “I Will Follow You Into the Dark”, during which the entire amphitheatre was lit with cell phone flashlights while virtually everyone sang along with him. The band even included an encore, where they covered TLC’s “Waterfalls”! Overall, it was a fantastic show that combined old classics with newer hits and made for an amazing night.
