A Place For Owls

Bright lights beam down on A Place For Owls band members as they begin to fill the stage: Ben Sooy is the lead singer (Guitar/Vox); Daniel Perez is the lead guitarist and Vox; Nick Webber plays guitar/ keyboard/ saxophone/ Vox; Ryan Day plays the bass guitar; and last but certainly not least Jesse Cowan on the drums live, but on albums he plays the guitar! (Vox is short for vocals)

Now, you may be asking yourself where the band name “ A Place For Owls” comes from. During the interview Ben Sooy answered just that question:

It’s the image of once humans are done destroying the Earth it will be reclaimed by nature; after our destruction, there is still hope.

Ben goes into more detail of their band origin; which you can listen to him elaborate in the interview!

The most vivid memory I have from watching A Place For Owls at The Skylark Lounge was at eleven o’clock; the whole band was sounding like a whole church choir singing the lyrics “tell me you are; tell me you are.” From there on I felt butterflies in my stomach: each song touched a different time in my life. Right then and there I could feel reassurance that I mattered as a person.

Secondly, my most memorable experience from A Place For Owls at Marquis Theater was at the beginning; I was shocked by how interactive the band was with audience. Band members were even at the merchandise table! I felt a sense of belonging once again. The audience was more packed than I’ve seen before! Wearing outfits that express oneself. From looking within myself and to the crowd around me; I realized that the action of just being at an Emo concert; is not just about the genre of music a person likes; it’s about the community and the sense of belonging you feel when you are at a Emo concert.

I know I’ve already brought up these lyrics:

Tell me you are, tell me you are

In my perspective, tell me you are: means to show your true self to others; and to be your true self without regret.

Furthermore, the artists that have inspired them; Ben Sooy stated: “late 80s, early 90s, 2000s emotional rock music; 2nd and 3rd wave Emo music: bands like Jimmy Eat World (Alernative/ Indie), Manchester Orchestra (Alternative/ Indie), Death Cab for Cutie (American indie rock); there’s a wide array of where we draw our inspiration from.”

From a person that does not listen to much Emo music; A Place For Owls is not just your typical Emo music; the music not only brings in the Emo genre but all genres. In effect of this, I believe A Place For Owls can make any venue feel like home; accepting anyone and everyone.

A Place For Owls have been around for a while and should be checked out by the Colorado locals; matter of fact not just Colorado locals everyone should! Check out this interview held by KRCX Crew Members (Alexander-Sophomore)/ (Manny-Freshman) with the vocalist Ben Sooy of A Place For Owls band as we discuss the band’s history.
