Beauty Marks - Ciara (2019) (Female Artist Spotlight)
by Maureen Brennan
Ciara’s Album starts at the beginning of her story with a self love ballad, “I Love Myself” featuring Macklemore. This song is about Ciara overcoming her fears, learning gratitude for the things she has, and most importantly she explains how she learned the power of love for herself. In interviews she takes this concept to another level, she explains that before moving forward in this dark time she was facing she had to accept and love every piece of herself. Self love became her power. She then spins the album in her bop “Level Up”, it has elements of pop, and R&B. “Level Up” is filled with empowering quotes, “I turned nothing into something” “no losses just upgrading” “made lessons into blessings” “thank God I never settled, this this view is so much better”. She follows this with more killer bops like “Set”, “Dose”, and “Na Na” each a song you can’t help but dance to. She has more features in her album like “Freak me" featuring Tekno, and “Girl Gang” featuring Kelly Rowland (beautiful vocals and a good one for the month of March). All of Beauty Marks is filled with encouraging empowering tunes. Ciara ends the album with arguably the most beautiful song on the album, “Beauty Marks” it tells the story of the love Ciara has for her husband Russel Wilson. The strong piano chords complementing her beautiful words creates a masterpiece, “Oh, what a feeling to wake up everyday, knowing I am loved by you” it gives you chills. Every interview Ciara explains her album more lessons and messages can be pulled from her songs.
