Weekday Wayback: Talking Heads - "Speaking in Tongues"

After releasing their self-titled debut in 1977, Talking Heads rocked the world of 80s music with a fresh new sound that combined polyrhythmic, multi-layered percussion and frenetic and herky-jerky guitar lines with the often shouted but always absurdist and yet somehow deeply meaningful lyricism of one David Byrne. They soon took over the airwaves and paved the way for a new and exciting genre of alternative music aptly named “New Wave”, bringing with them all the weirdos and outcasts who wanted to go roller skating late at night, liked playing arcade games, and wanted to wear neon and even polyester jumpsuits. In 1980 the band released what some consider their greatest masterpiece, Remain in Light. And while this album remains a classic to this day, many often forget the album I would like to spotlight today, released after a three year break in which many of the band members furthered their knowledge of different styles of music (especially Afro-Carribean) and honed their craft to absolute perfection. Today’s Weekday Wayback is all about the often ignored, but still clean, funky, and groovy Speaking in Tongues.
